Safe listening levels?

We often get asked by people “what is the maximum SPL that can be produced by your loudspeakers?“. One point these people always miss is that in most cases, our speakers can be driven by enough power to push your ears in to the danger zone. Therefore I felt it necessary to post the following information to help you understand the fact you might be damaging your hearing at certain listen levels.

Decibel Exposure Time Guidelines

Accepted standards for recommended permissible exposure time for continuous time weighted average noise, according to NIOSH and CDC circa 2002. For every 3dB’s over 85dB, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half.

85dB = 8 hours

88dB = 4 hours

91dB = 2 hours

94dB = 1 hour

97dB = 30 minutes

100dB = 15 minutes

103dB = 7.5 minutes

106dB = 3.75 minutes

109dB = 1.875 minutes

112dB = 0.9375 minutes

115dB = 0.46875 minutes

As an example, if you used the K3 floor-standing loudspeaker and an amplifier capable of producing 200W into 4 Ohms. Driven at full volume as a stereo pair in a room, you would be producing 116dB @ 1m.
